WHAT IS A POSTPARTUM DOULA?

Basically, a postpartum doula is like a BFF / mentor / maid of honour for all things postpartum. They support and empower you to make the best choices for you and your family, and leave the medical side of things to the folks wearing scrubs. As a maternity care specialist, your doula is trained in all aspects of journey to parenthood, starting from conception all the way to the first year after baby.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A DOULA AND A NANNY?

Whereas a nanny cares only for your children, a postpartum doula cares for both mom & baby in the tender time following birth. This means that along with helping you become the best parents for your baby, your doula is also knowledgeable about a mother’s special needs in the postpartum period and is able to facilitate a smooth emotional and physical transition to motherhood.

Most important to note a postpartum doulas has completed many hours of training in lactation support and infant care to provide the help or encouragement you need.

WHAT WON'T A POSTPARTUM DOULA DO?

Postpartum doulas do not provide medical services, treatments, or diagnosis for mother or baby, nor do we provide heavy housekeeping.

I can provide recommendations for basic care needs and advice on when to speak with your medical professional

Recommendations for health concerns can vary, always seek care at an Emergency Department or call 911 if you believe you are having a medical emergency.

We also do not drive clients or infants. A postpartum doula is many things, but a cleaner, nanny, or driver is not one of them!

WHAT DOES A BEREAVEMENT DOULA DO?

A postpartum bereavement doula supports families who have experienced the loss of a baby during or shortly after pregnancy. This role is delicate and compassionate, as it involves providing emotional, physical, and informational support during an immensely painful time.
Depending on age and skin intergrity molds of hands and feet can be casted for lasting memories, assistance with photographs and keepsakes are made by the doula.
